MARINE COATING GUIDE

How to Choose Coatings for Boats, Jetties and Submerged Structures

Anything in or near water faces constant attack from moisture, salt and marine growth. Choose the coating around the water type, whether the surface is fully submerged, and the structure itself.

Quick answer

Underwater hull of a vessel, barge or buoy
DeepSea Anti-fouling
Pilings, jetties, water gates and pipelines, submerged or buried
ColyPotar 520
Epoxy primer for marine coating systems
Colypoxy 502 or Colypoxy 505

Step 1: Identify the zone

  • Underwater hull: needs anti-fouling to limit marine growth. DeepSea Anti-fouling is a tin-free anti-fouling paint for underwater hulls of vessels, barges and buoys. The catalogue covers deep sea, brackish and fresh-water service.
  • Submerged, semi-submerged or buried structures: need a high-build barrier. ColyPotar 520 is a two-component coal tar epoxy for steel and concrete pipelines, pilings, water gates and jetties, with resistance to fresh water, salt water, wastewater and chemicals.

Step 2: Prepare and prime correctly

Marine systems depend heavily on surface preparation and film thickness. Colypoxy 502 and Colypoxy 505 are two-component epoxy universal primers for industrial and marine settings. Immersion service with ColyPotar 520 requires the preparation and film build specified in its technical sheet.

Step 3: Know the limits

  • ColyPotar 520 is not suitable for overcoating with other finishes, because it tends to bleed.
  • Allow full curing before immersion or launch, as specified in the technical sheet.
  • For hulls, plan the dry-dock time so preparation, coats and the launch interval all fit.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using a normal topside paint below the waterline.
  • Applying too thin a film on immersed steel.
  • Immersing before the coating has fully cured.
  • Trying to paint another finish over coal tar epoxy.
